As the very first campus under this strategic framework, the Gambian satellite campus aims to expand access to high-quality mathematical sciences training, reduce per-student training costs, and bring AIMS closer to the communities it serves.

Spearheaded by the leadership of AIMS Senegal in close partnership with the Government of The Gambia and the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program, this institution expands access to world-class training in mathematical sciences, data science, and artificial intelligence, effectively bridging critical educational gaps across West Africa.

Official Inauguration by the Ministry of Higher Education

The AIMS Satellite Campus in The Gambia was formally inaugurated by the Honourable Minister of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology, Prof. Pierre Gomez. The ceremony was celebrated before a massive, distinguished audience comprising government representatives, policymakers, decision-makers, private sector leaders, educators, and young innovators.

Grounded in a shared Pan-African vision, the ceremony featured profound keynote addresses by Prof. Sam Yala (AIMS Network President and AIMS Rwanda Centre President) and Prof. Mouhamed Moustapha Fall (AIMS Senegal Centre President). Both leaders articulated the overarching mission of AIMS to strengthen Africa’s knowledge economy, advance regional collaboration, and nurture home-grown scientific talent. Special acknowledgment was extended to AIMS Senegal for its institutional leadership in transforming the AIMS Network’s long-term vision from plan to reality.

Launch of Africa Science Week 2026 and Youth Innovation Showcase

Coinciding with the campus inauguration, the day also marked the launch and opening ceremony of the AIMS Alumni-Led Africa Science Week 2026. The event successfully spotlighted the immense potential of the next generation, providing a platform where talented young Gambians exhibited cutting-edge, innovative technological solutions they are actively developing to address local pressing challenges.

This vibrant showcase of local ingenuity was complemented by an outstanding scientific panel discussion. High-level experts and researchers engaged in a deep dialogue focused on leveraging science, technology, and innovation (STI) as essential catalysts for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Africa, specifically focusing on fostering inclusive public dialogue and empowering African youth and underrepresented groups.

A New Chapter for the AIMS Network

The successful launch in The Gambia signifies more than just a localized milestone; it marks the beginning of an expansive new chapter for the entire AIMS Network ecosystem, including AIMS South Africa, AIMS Ghana, AIMS Cameroon, AIMS Senegal, AIMS Rwanda, and the AIMS Research and Innovation Centre.

This milestone hub now stands as a permanent center for talent development, research collaboration, and STEM capacity building, effectively empowering African youth to drive the continent’s sustainable, long-term scientific transformation.

BANJUL, THE GAMBIA Tuesday, June 23rd, 2026, marked a historic and memorable milestone for young Africans and the architects of the continent’s scientific future as the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) officially launched its first Satellite Campus, hosted in The Gambia.
