PhD Fellowship in Mathematical Modelling of Diseases: One year at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health, University of Toronto & 2-3 Years at AIMS Senegal
Background
Disease outbreaks are becoming more frequent and severe, with climate change and human encroachment on natural landscapes increasing vulnerability to emerging diseases. The One Health concept highlights the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health. To address these complex challenges, analyzing large datasets is essential, and Mathematics and AI-driven solutions are increasingly used for risk identification and predictive modeling. However, there is a knowledge imbalance, especially in Africa, where researchers lack the training to apply AI in their contexts.

Pourquoi postuler

Successful fellows are expected to conduct research in the thematic Dynamical Systems and differential equations napplied to Health. They are expected to publish their results in peer-reviewed journals and conferences, and to be actively engaged in the research activities of AIMS. Fellows are also expected to have some involvement in the AIMS Senegal academic programs. Fellows will be affiliated with AIMS Senegal

Financement

To address this, Global Affairs Canada, through the BCDI 2030 program, is funding a collaboration between the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) in Senegal and the Dalla Lana School of Public Health, University of Toronto. This will provide a training program in Mathematical Modelling of Diseases. The program will produce interdisciplinary researchers skilled in data analytics and disease modeling, and they will be networked with policymakers globally. The program will involve PhD students progressing to advanced training at the Artificial Intelligence and Mathematical Modelling Lab (https://aimmlab.org/), Dalla Lana School of Public Health, University of Toronto (https://www.dlsph.utoronto.ca/) before returning to Senegal for dual supervision.
